Anxiety

At Self and Other, we recognize that every person’s experience of anxiety is unique. Some suffer from frequent panic attacks, others fear social situations, and many experience generalized anxiety marked by intense–and seemingly unending–worry. While there are several different anxiety-related diagnoses, many of them include psychological symptoms such as uncontrollable fear or uneasiness. Anxiety can also cause people to experience physical symptoms, including rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath.

No matter how it manifests–whether the symptoms are mild or severe, short-term or long-lasting–each person struggling with anxiety deserves a supportive, empathetic environment in which to develop confidence and build resilience.

In our practice, we strive to create a compassionate and welcoming atmosphere for every client. Our team of experienced therapists are here to listen without judgment and guide clients toward a more fulfilling future. We do so by tailoring our treatments to meet each person’s specific circumstances, utilizing our toolbox of modalities to find the treatment best-suited to their needs.

Some people come to therapy looking to learn how to manage a range of anxiety symptoms such as catastrophizing, panic attacks, or indecisiveness. These strategies can include tracking anxious thoughts in a journal or engaging in somatic practices–such as breathing exercises–to manage physiological symptoms. Implementing these cognitive behavioral tools can help clients better understand and address their anxiety symptoms.

Others come to therapy looking to move beyond symptom management, wanting to dive deeper into the roots of their anxiety, explore unconscious patterns, and identify unresolved conflicts. In these instances, we use a psychodynamic approach to help clients gain valuable insight into the underlying factors that contribute to their anxiety. This level of understanding can pave the way for profound emotional healing and personal growth.

In addition to psychodynamic therapy, we frequently incorporate aspects of existential psychotherapy into the treatment of anxiety. This encourages individuals to grapple with existential concerns such as meaning and purpose. Humans are often preoccupied with deeper questions like ‘how did my life end up here?’; ‘where will I find belonging?’; or ‘what will give my life richer meaning?’. By addressing such fundamental questions, clients gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world, leading to a greater sense of fulfillment and well-being.

Ultimately, we believe everyone deserves to live a life free from the burden of anxiety. Which is why our practice is dedicated to providing comprehensive, thoughtful care to those struggling with its symptoms. Our team of experienced therapists is here to support clients through every step of their journey toward healing and recovery.
